Forests have an important role to play in the achievement of Ireland’s Climate Action targets. That’s why at Coillte, we manage our forests sustainably, to help combat climate change, to supply wood and wood products for building low-carbon homes, to enhance and restore biodiversity, and to provide beautiful places for people to enjoy.

We are focused on balancing and delivering the multiple benefits of our forests, for climate, nature, wood, and people, ensuring that, working together, we are delivering a greener future for all.

One of the ways Coillte contributes to Ireland’s Greener Future is by producing a sustainable, home-grown supply of Irish wood. This wood is used in the construction of our low carbon homes, helping to reduce carbon emissions and supporting local jobs. Building with wood is efficient – it’s faster and reduces waste, saving time and money. Wood is also versatile, used for fencing, decking and for pallets to transport goods around the world and to produce MDF to make furniture. That’s why Coillte produces c. 3 million cubic metres of sustainable, certified wood annually. For every tree we harvest, we plant three new ones, ensuring a continuous, renewable supply.

Irish forests provide a triple benefit to our climate by serving as a carbon sink, store and substitute. Forests are often referred to as the lungs of our planet because as trees grow, they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, releasing pure oxygen back into the air. In Ireland, conifer trees, such as spruces and pines, grow quickly, absorbing carbon dioxide at a faster rate. This carbon is then stored in the tree’s wood and broadleaved trees are especially good at storing large amounts of carbon. Building with Irish wood and wood products from sustainably managed forests, instead of carbon-intensive materials like concrete and steel, helps to reduce carbon emissions. That’s why at Coillte we’re managing our forests sustainably and planting new ones too, contributing to Ireland’s Climate Action goals.

Forests are vital habitats for Ireland’s wild plants and animals and we need to protect and enhance biodiversity. That’s why Coillte is dedicating large areas of our forests to nature. The Coillte estate consists of a varied tapestry of different habitats ranging from conifer forests, mixed and broadleaved forests to open bogs, heathlands, lakes and rivers. We are actively managing these areas to enhance and restore biodiversity and also identifying areas of forests that can be redesigned for nature. By prioritising nature conservation, we are playing a role in preserving Ireland’s unique natural heritage.

Free for everyone to visit, they bring physical and mental health benefits to local communities nationwide. Coillte is creating more recreational forests in communities all over Ireland, providing spaces where families can hike, bike, explore, and relax. We are also developing more outstanding visitor destinations where people can enjoy Ireland’s natural beauty, while supporting local tourism and the local economy.
