Invasive Species Control and Tree Felling Works for Cornagillagh and Derrycarne Woods

Work will commence shortly on the Shannonside Woodland Restoration biodiversity project which is managed by Coillte Nature.

This project includes two woodland sites close to the river Shannon in South Leitrim – Cornagillagh and Derrycarne.

Invasive species such as rhododendron and laurel, along with snowberry and Himalayan balsam are present in Cornagillagh and Derrycarne woods. These non-native species have negative impacts on the native flora and natural regeneration of trees in these forests.  As part of Coillte Nature’s biodiversity works, the invasive species will be removed over the coming weeks which will improve the woodland habitat for wildlife, flora and fauna into the future.

In addition, two blocks of mature Sitka spruce and western hemlock trees at Cornagillagh property (totalling 4ha) will be felled (see map below). Mature oak and other native trees within these blocks will be retained where possible.

These areas will be replanted this coming winter with native trees and shrubs – a mix of oak, Scots pine, birch, hazel, holly and spindle, with willow and birch planted in the wetter areas of the forests.

We thank you for your patience during this process.

Please follow all signage and please take care on the roads with timber lorries entering and exiting the forest.
