Overview

Dartrey Forest, was formerly the estate of the Dawson family. It is currently managed by Coillte as a commercial forest. The Forest is bordered by a Famine wall which stretches half way along the road from Cootehill to Rockcorry. The landscape of the forest and surrounding area is particularly beautiful, being composed of a series of lakes joined by the Dromore River.

Take the R188 from Cootehill and follow the road past the monument on your left, the car park is a further 1.5 km along on your right hand side.

Things to do

Walking trails in Dartry will cater for most abilities.

The Fairfield Loop – ca. 2 km – green markers – ca. 40 minutes – easy grade

The Deer Park Loop – ca. 5 km – blue markers – ca. 1 1/2 hours – moderate grade

The Temple Loop  – ca. 7 km – red markers – ca. 2 hours – moderate grade

Step back in time at Dartrey Forest, formerly the estate of the Dawson family.

The Dromore River wends its way through the forest joined by a series of scenic lakes.

If you are doing the Temple Loop, look out for the Dawson Mausoleum, designed in 1770 by James Wyatt and modelled on the Pantheon in Rome.
